This engraving portrays James II, who ruled England, Scotland and Ireland from 1685 until 1688, when Parliament invited William of Orange to take the throne after James's Catholicism and absolutist policies alarmed many of his subjects. As the second son of Charles I, James had spent years in exile during the Commonwealth before the Restoration brought his family back. The caption card records no date and names only Gebbie & Co. as the maker, so the print's origin is uncertain. James died in exile in France in 1701.
