Bare fuselage frames for the Supermarine Spitfire, the fighter then taking shape on British production lines, are the focus of this halftone reproduction from the May 17, 1939 issue of *Aeroplane*, a British aviation weekly. Designed by R. J. Mitchell and first flown in 1936, the Spitfire was built by Supermarine, which had joined the Vickers-Armstrongs group in 1938. The picture was taken only months before the outbreak of war in September 1939, when Britain was rapidly expanding its aircraft output. It offers a rare view of the riveted airframe structure before the wings and engine were fitted.
