Hermann Göring, the Reich Air Minister and head of the Luftwaffe, walks through the Junkers aircraft works in Dessau with four officials, with a Junkers bomber visible in the background. The photograph is dated September 5, 1939, four days after Germany invaded Poland and two days after Britain and France declared war, so the visit took place at the very start of the European war. The Dessau plant built transport and dive-bomber aircraft that were central to the Luftwaffe's early campaigns, which makes the scene a useful record of Germany's rearmament at that moment.
