This view looks down the length of a tunnel cut into a mountainside in Germany, where aircraft were assembled in 1945. In 1944 and early 1945, Allied bombing campaigns pushed German aircraft production underground, moving work into rock tunnels, mines, and caves that were harder to hit from the air. The photograph was taken by the United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe, whose teams documented such sites as Allied forces advanced. The record's details are unverified, but the picture still shows how far the Germans went to keep their war industry running.
