Goethe's birthplace on Frankfurt's Großer Hirschgraben is the house where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born on August 28, 1749, and it stands as one of the most visited literary sites in Germany. The family home was a substantial middle-class townhouse, and Goethe spent his early years there before the Goethe family's fortunes and his own career took him elsewhere. The house was badly damaged during the Second World War and was later rebuilt and reopened as a museum devoted to the poet's life. This photograph, though undated in its record, shows the building as a monument to a writer whose works shaped German literature.
