Clarence Chamberlin is shown riding on the shoulders of a cheering crowd after arriving in Germany, a bouquet of flowers in his hand. Shortly before, he had flown the monoplane *Columbia* across the Atlantic from New York with passenger Charles Levine, a long-distance flight that set a new world distance record. Coming only about two weeks after Charles Lindbergh's solo flight to Paris, the German welcome shows how eagerly the public embraced transatlantic aviation in 1927. The photograph captures the jubilant, informal side of that moment, when airmen were treated as national heroes.
