Shown walking alone with a cane, the former German emperor appears here on the grounds of his estate, which by the early 1920s was Huis Doorn in the Netherlands. Wilhelm II had abdicated in November 1918 at the close of the First World War and crossed the border into exile, where he lived out his years in relative seclusion until his death in 1941. Images like this one, dated around 1922, offered the public a glimpse of a monarch who had lost both his throne and his empire. The print carries a copyright credit to photographer Fred E. Hamlin.
