Its headline poses a pointed question: "Did you do anything to beat Germany last year?" Printed in Toronto by the Central Recruiting Committee of No. 2 Military Division, this 1915 color lithograph challenged men who had spent the war's first year on the sidelines. Canada entered the war in August 1914 as part of the British Empire and raised its forces through voluntary enlistment until conscription arrived in 1917. Posters like this one, with their direct appeal to the viewer, were a central tool in recruiting men for the Canadian Expeditionary Force.
