A sentry's challenge, "Halt! Who goes there?", gives this 1915 recruiting poster its hook: it asks anyone who counts as a friend to step into the British ranks and support the soldiers at the front. The London Parliamentary Recruiting Committee issued it during Britain's voluntary enlistment drive, before conscription was introduced in 1916. Hill, Siffken & Co. printed the color lithograph at its Grafton Works in London. Posters like this one were pasted up across the country to appeal to men's sense of duty and comradeship.
