The guard gate at Gatun Lock, shown here while still under construction, sets this etching apart from later views of the Panama Canal's finished locks. Joseph Pennell made it in 1912, as the lock system that would raise ships about 85 feet to Gatun Lake was taking shape. This impression is a trial proof, signed on the plate and in pencil, so it shows an early stage of the printing before the edition was finalized. Pennell's canal etchings are still valued as detailed records of the engineering work of those years.
