The signature on this title page sets this copy apart: it bears the name of James Madison, later the fourth president and a principal author of the United States Constitution. The book is John Millar's *The Origin of the Distinction of Ranks*, published in London in 1779 by a Glasgow professor of law who argued that social rank grew out of property and the ways people earned their living. Millar was a leading figure of the Scottish Enlightenment, and his stage theory of economic and social development was widely discussed in both Britain and America. A reader's name on the page is a physical trace of that exchange of ideas across the Atlantic.
