Few French country houses are as closely tied to their water as the Château de Courances, which sits within easy reach of the Fontainebleau forest south of Paris. Its long, still basins and straight tree-lined canals reflect a formal garden tradition that prized geometry and reflection, with the château rising behind them. Frances Benjamin Johnston, an American photographer who recorded gardens and architecture in Europe in the early twentieth century, made this view. The caption card dates the print between 1910 and 1925, though that date has not been independently verified.
