The print shows the Halles Centrales, the wholesale food market in the heart of Paris, with a view of the market's activity and a set of scales in use. The market's iron-and-glass pavilions, designed by Victor Baltard in the mid-1800s, made it one of the city's best-known landmarks, and Émile Zola called it the "belly of Paris" in his 1873 novel of that name. The record dates the photograph to 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, when such open-air trade was still central to how Parisians bought their food.
