The print pairs the Fontaine Saint-Michel, a bronze-and-stone fountain in the Place Saint-Michel that shows the archangel Michael slaying a dragon, with the Boulevard de Sébastopol. The fountain was built in the late 1850s and early 1860s during Baron Haussmann's rebuilding of Paris under Napoleon III. The boulevard was cut through the city in the same campaign and named for the siege of Sevastopol in the Crimean War. The caption card records no date, so the print can only be placed generally in the later 19th century, when both were new and the city was being remade around wide, straight avenues.
