The Colonnade, the grand eastern front of the Palais du Louvre, is the subject here, its long rhythm of paired Corinthian columns standing out against the older palace. Built in the 1670s under Louis XIV and designed largely by the physician and architect Claude Perrault, the colonnade gave the royal palace a monumental classical face that set the standard for French public architecture for generations. By the time this view was made around 1900, the Louvre had long been a museum, and its courtyards and facades drew steady crowds of visitors and artists. The picture is worth studying for how it frames that layered history, with the columns recording both the Sun King's ambitions and the city's later role as a center of culture.
