Benjamin Franklin and Richard Oswald, the Scottish-born British diplomat, sit at the center of this scene, which Howard Pyle drew for the 1898 issue of *Scribner's Magazine*. Oswald held talks with Franklin in Paris that led to preliminary peace articles in 1782, and the final Treaty of Paris followed in 1783 to end the Revolutionary War. Pyle, best known for his illustrations of American history, made the drawing at a time when many Americans were looking back on the nation's founding with growing interest. This halftone reproduction preserves his composition for printed publication.
