This picture shows William Jennings Bryan and Henry Ford in conversation just before the Ford Peace Ship Expedition set out. The caption records Bryan telling Ford that he will meet him at The Hague, a reminder of the plan to carry a private peace mission to Europe during the First World War. Bryan, a former Secretary of State, and Ford, the automobile manufacturer, were both prominent public figures, and the expedition drew wide press attention, much of it skeptical. The date of December 1915 places the image at the start of that voyage, when the mission's goals still seemed possible to its backers.
