Four cutaway views of the Life-Car set this wood engraving apart from ordinary shipwreck scenes, since it explains the machine's interior rather than showing a rescue in progress. The Life-Car was an enclosed cable car meant to carry people between a stranded ship and the shore, so a sailor could be hauled through surf that would otherwise drown him. The engraving ran in Harper's Magazine in 1851, when rescue technology for wrecks was drawing wide public attention. Its cross-sections show how passengers were seated and how the car was secured to the line.
