Polka dots run along both the sleeves and the hem of the outfit in this 1911 view, which its caption card places in Paris in May of that year. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the holdings of a New York news photo agency that supplied pictures of current events and fashions to American newspapers in the early twentieth century. Paris set the direction for women's clothing at the time, and designers such as Paul Poiret were moving away from the rigid corseted silhouette toward straighter, looser lines. The wearer and the garment's maker are not named in the record, so the dress is best read as an example of the period's taste for bold, playful patterns.
