This photograph shows women selling curios in Juneau, Alaska, a gold-rush town that by the mid-1890s was a busy stop for steamships carrying tourists north from Seattle. Its caption card, which is unverified, labels the sellers "Eskimos," a term used loosely at the time for Indigenous peoples of Alaska, and the names of the women are not recorded. Souvenir baskets, carvings, and beadwork like these were a common way for Native makers to earn money from visitors, so the scene offers a glimpse of that trade at the waterfront.
