A woman of princely rank rides in the state entry of the Delhi Durbar, the ceremony that Lord Curzon, the British viceroy, held at Delhi in January 1903 to mark the accession of King Edward VII. Processions of Indian rulers, their retinues and decorated elephants were central to the event, and the card's caption tags point to that spectacle. Underwood & Underwood, the American stereograph firm, sold views like this to home audiences, who could see distant ceremonies in three dimensions through a stereoscope. The card is a useful record of how British imperial pageantry displayed Indian princely rank for viewers far from Delhi.
