Few sites in India are as recognizable as the Golden Temple at Amritsar, whose gilded upper stories rise from a marble causeway above a sacred pool. Known to Sikhs as Harmandir Sahib, the shrine was completed under Guru Arjan in the early 1600s and houses the Guru Granth Sahib, the faith's scripture. Ranjit Singh, the Sikh ruler of the Punjab, covered much of the building in gold in the 1830s, which gave it the name by which most outsiders know it. This view comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection, made by American travel writers who photographed India for readers at home around 1890 to 1923.
