Totem poles are the detail that sets this picture apart: the record names them as a subject, and they stand among the houses of Howkan, a Haida village on Long Island in southeast Alaska. The cabinet card was made around 1901 by Winter & Pond, a photography studio in Juneau, the territorial capital and a busy port for travelers and prospectors. Such studios sold views of Alaska towns and Native communities to visitors and to people back in the States, so the card reflects how outsiders were beginning to see these villages during the gold-rush era.
