The subject here is the Canadian Pacific Railway steamer *Princess May*, shown after it struck a reef at Sentinel Island in Alaska's Lynn Canal on August 5, 1910. The company's Princess ships carried passengers and freight along the Inside Passage between the Pacific Northwest and southeastern Alaska, a busy route during the gold rush era, so a grounding there drew attention. The print is part of the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection, which the Library of Congress holds for its travel and world-view photographs. Those images give a record of how remote coastal waterways looked to travelers of the period.
