Holy Cross Mission stood on the lower Yukon River in western Alaska, a place that was reached mainly by river steamer and was, at the turn of the twentieth century, one of the more remote outposts of Catholic missionary work in the territory. The Jesuits who ran the mission served Yup'ik and other Native communities along the river, and its buildings were central to schooling, religious life, and the everyday routines of mission outposts. The picture is part of the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection, which the Library of Congress holds, and it reflects the travel photography that drew American readers to Alaska during the Klondike and gold rush years.
