Frith's view centers on the doorway of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the entrance to the complex that tradition identifies as the site of Jesus's crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. Frith, a British photographer, traveled in Egypt and the Holy Land in the late 1850s, and this view was issued as plate 18 in *Sinai and Palestine*, an illustrated book published in London. The albumen print is signed on its glass negative, a detail that marks it as a working record of the photographer's own process. Local Muslim families have long held the church's keys, a custom that still shapes how the building is opened and secured.
