Jerusalem seen from the Mount of Olives is a view that photographers and painters returned to again and again, and this woodburytype stands out because it was made for a book rather than sold as a standalone view. It appeared opposite page 24 of *Pathways of Palestine*, a descriptive tour of the Holy Land by the English clergyman and naturalist H.B. Tristram, published in London in 1881. The print is attributed to Frank Mason Good, and the woodburytype process, which turned photographs into tones of ink without a halftone screen, gave the city's walls and rooftops a fine, continuous softness. Viewed from the Mount of Olives, the old city spreads across the valley below, so the picture gives readers a vantage point that many travelers of the period sought out.
