The Tower of David, a massive stone citadel beside the Jaffa Gate, is the subject here, photographed by R.E.M. Bain around 1895. The structure's older foundations date to the Herodian era, but most of the visible fortifications come from later centuries, including Mamluk and Ottoman work. The name is a medieval attribution: Crusaders associated the tower with King David, though it had no known connection to him. Around 1895, the citadel stood at the edge of the walled Old City as Jerusalem was growing beyond its walls, which makes this view useful for seeing how the site looked before later changes.
