Among the many First Crusade pictures on this board, this woodcut shows the siege of Jerusalem in 1099, when crusading forces broke into the city in July after a long assault. It appeared in a Dutch edition of Robertus Remensis's *Historia itineris contra Turcos*, printed in Gouda around 1486, which places it among the early printed books known as incunabula. Woodblocks like this were set into the printed page alongside type, and printers often reused them across different books. The image shows how late medieval readers pictured the crusades, through bold, simplified scenes of walls, banners and armed men.
