Few stops on the stereoscope tour of Greece carried as much legend as the citadel of Tiryns, which the caption calls the birthplace of Hercules. Greek tradition more often places Hercules's birth at Thebes, but Tiryns was the kingdom where he served King Eurystheus, and its walls gave the myth a physical anchor. Those walls, built of enormous unworked stones, were so impressive to later Greeks that they attributed them to the Cyclopes. Underwood & Underwood issued this card around 1897, when such views of ancient Greek sites were popular with armchair travelers.
