This stereograph shows the athletes' entrance at the ancient stadium at Olympia, the sanctuary in the western Peloponnese where Greek city-states held athletic contests from 776 BCE until the games were ended in the late fourth century CE. By the time this card was made around 1907, excavations of the site, carried out by German archaeologists from the 1870s, had uncovered the stadium's stone-lined passages and track, and interest in the site had grown. Underwood & Underwood, a firm that sold stereo views to American households, issued many such cards of European and Mediterranean landmarks, and the revival of the modern Olympics in Athens in 1896 and 1906 helped draw attention to this ancient site.
