Four children stand at the edge of a cliff on Nunivak Island, off Alaska's western coast, dressed in holiday clothing for the camera. Edward S. Curtis made the picture around 1929 for *The North American Indian*, his multivolume series, issued in Seattle between 1907 and 1930, that aimed to document Native peoples across the continent. It appeared on page 30 of volume 20 and reflects the posed, carefully arranged style Curtis favored. The original title uses the older term "Eskimo," which has largely given way to the names Alaska Native communities use for themselves.
