The caption names this portrait's subject as Baninaguh, but the record flags that information as unverified, so the name should be treated as provisional. The photograph was taken on Nunivak Island, a Bering Sea island off western Alaska whose Cup'ik residents were known for fine grass basketry and carved wooden masks. Edward S. Curtis made the image around 1929, during the years he was documenting Indigenous peoples across North America for his multivolume *The North American Indian*.
