Unloading freight on the waterfront at Skaguay, the steamer Willamette lies alongside in this view from about 1897, when the town was swept up in the Klondike gold rush. Thousands of prospectors passed through Skagway in 1897 and 1898 on their way over the passes toward the Yukon, and every sack of flour and crate of tools had to be landed by ship before it could be hauled inland. The print is credited to the photographers Winter & Pond, and its stacked cargo and crowded dock show the supply chain that made the boom possible.
