Chilcoot Pass, on the boundary between Alaska and British Columbia, was the route many prospectors took to the Klondike, and this stereograph card shows the scene as it was reaching viewers around 1898. Stampeders who came over the pass had to haul a year's supplies, which the Canadian authorities set at roughly a ton per person, in relays up its steep slopes, including the "Golden Stairs" of cut steps in the snow. Keystone View Company, which published stereo cards like this one under B.L. Singley's copyright, sold such views to home audiences who used viewers to see the scene in three dimensions. The record's details come from the original caption card and are unverified.
