A placer operation on Moose Creek in Alaska anchors this picture, where miners worked gold out of creek gravels rather than from solid rock. The halftone was reproduced from a photograph by Merl LaVoy, a photographer known for his views of the Alaska and Yukon goldfields in the early 1900s. It was copyrighted by the Mentor Association, whose illustrated magazine *The Mentor* carried such views to a national readership. The record dates the print to about 1914, a period when placer mining remained central to Alaska's gold economy, and the image shows the sluicing and gravel-washing methods of that era.
