Saginaw Jake is identified only by name in this portrait of a man from Killisnoo, a village on Admiralty Island in southeastern Alaska, and the record gives no further biography. Killisnoo was a Tlingit community that became known for its herring oil and fertilizer works in the late 1800s, when the region drew steady attention from canneries, mining, and federal officials. The catalog tracings link the picture to Indian government relations and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which suggests the image was filed among documents of federal dealings with Alaska Native communities. Studio portraits of this period were often sold as souvenirs, so the photographer's name, Winter & Pond, is a useful clue to how the image circulated.
