Storm wreckage piled along the Snake River at Nome, Alaska, sets this view apart from other scenes of the town. Nome was a boomtown in the late 1890s and 1900, when gold strikes on the Seward Peninsula drew thousands of miners to a shoreline of tents and hastily built frame structures exposed to the open waters of Norton Sound. A photoprint copyrighted by William Hester of Seattle records the aftermath, though its date and cause come from an old caption card and have not been verified.
