The Alaska Colliery at Mount Carmel, in northeastern Pennsylvania's anthracite country, is the subject here, though its caption card gives no date for the view. Mount Carmel sat in the Northern Coal Field, where by the late 19th century many mines and breakers were processing hard anthracite for home heating and industry across the Northeast. Collieries of this kind were defined by their breakers, tall wooden structures that crushed and sorted coal, and by the work of miners and young breaker boys who picked slate from the moving coal. Details about this particular operation are best confirmed in local mining histories.
