Fort St. George at Elmina, on the Gold Coast, is the English name for a fortress whose origins go back to 1482, when Portuguese builders raised it as São Jorge da Mina. It is among the oldest surviving European buildings in sub-Saharan Africa. The Dutch seized it in 1637 and held it for more than two centuries, and the British took control in 1872, after which it served as a center of colonial administration. Its walls and dungeons are a stark reminder of its role in the Atlantic slave trade, when captive Africans were held there before shipment. The record gives no date or photographer, so the picture's exact age is uncertain.
