Nine Mandingo people are the subject of this 1893 photograph from Liberia, a country on the West African coast that had been founded in the 1820s by settlers sent from the United States. The Mandingo, or Manding, are a people whose communities spread across the interior of West Africa, and many of them worked as traders moving goods along long routes between the coast and the inland markets. Images like this one were often made for European and American audiences curious about African peoples, so the posed group and the choice of subject say as much about how outsiders viewed them as about daily life.
