M.J. McCarthy's team, driven by Chester Bilby, was entered in the third All-Alaska Sweepstakes, a long-distance dog sled race that drew mushers and teams from across the Seward Peninsula around Nome. The race was a showpiece of the gold-rush era, when dog teams were still the main way to carry mail, supplies, and people across the frozen interior. The photograph was taken by Lomen Brothers, a Nome studio whose portraits and views document the town and its winter travel. Its record lists the subject as dog teams and dogsledding in Alaska in 1910.
