This photograph shows the departure of Hubert Latham, a French sapper and aviator, during the 1910 military manoeuvres in Picardy, where aircraft were used to scout and observe troop movements. Latham was one of the best-known early pilots in France, flying Antoinette monoplanes and attempting a crossing of the English Channel in 1909, when he came down in the water near Calais. The manoeuvres of 1910 reflected how quickly the army was experimenting with aviation, and the scene captures the cramped, open-air world of early flight, when pilots, mechanics and fragile machines set out from fields rather than airfields.
