The stereograph shows the interior of the Roman amphitheater at Arles, with tiered stone seating rising around an open oval floor. Built around the late first century, the arena could hold roughly 20,000 spectators for gladiatorial contests and animal hunts. Over the centuries it was fortified and partly filled with dwellings, and it was later cleared during the nineteenth century. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued cards like this around 1929 for classrooms and home stereoscopes, so the paired images were meant to bring a distant ancient site into the viewer's sight.
