Dated Sunday, June 19, 1864, this lithograph shows the sloop of war Kearsarge, whose title refers to seven guns fired toward France. That was the same day the ship engaged the Confederate raider Alabama off the French port of Cherbourg, where the Alabama was sunk. The Alabama had captured or burned Union merchant ships for nearly two years, so the victory was widely celebrated in the North. Currier & Ives, a New York firm known for popular views of current events, issued the print as a hand-colored lithograph for a broad public audience.
