Inside a dwelling on Yezo, the older name for Hokkaido, the owner and his family sit among their household belongings, posed in their own home rather than in a studio. The card was issued around 1906 by H.C. White of North Bennington, Vermont, a firm that made stereographs of travel and foreign scenes for home parlor viewers. Such views were popular in the early twentieth century and reflected both real curiosity and a habit of presenting indigenous peoples as exotic subjects. By then Ainu communities were living under Japanese policies that pressed them toward assimilation, so the interior offers a posed but valuable glimpse of everyday domestic life.
