Crowds gather on theater Street in Asakusa, Tokyo's lively entertainment quarter, where a free show draws onlookers toward the brick silhouette of Asakusa Tower, a landmark also known as Ryūnkaku. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that sold stereograph views for home viewers, published this card in 1904, when Japan was becoming a popular subject for Western audiences. The scene shows how popular entertainment spilled out of theaters and into the open street, with spectators packed closely around the performance. The tower, which rose above the district as a symbol of modern Tokyo, was badly damaged in the 1923 earthquake.
