A 1961 color poster from Tokyo, issued by the Forest Protection Movement, promotes a tree-planting campaign aimed at the whole country. Japan's forests had been heavily cut during the war and the reconstruction years that followed, and erosion and flooding made replanting a practical concern as well as a civic one. Ryuichi Yamashiro's design belongs to a wave of postwar Japanese posters that used strong color to carry public messages into city streets. Its focus on forests and conservation shows how quickly environmental concerns were becoming part of national life in the early 1960s.
