Édouard Baldus, a French photographer best known for his large architectural views, made this albumen print of the Louvre in the early 1850s to 1860s, when Paris was being remade under Napoleon III and Baron Haussmann. The record ties it to the album Paris et ses environs en photographies, so it was likely issued as one of a series of city views meant for buyers and collectors. Baldus's careful framing and long exposures make the palace's stone facades and surrounding street look crisp and orderly. The gold toning, a common step in albumen printing, gives the image its warm brown tone.
