Few buildings in Paris were as closely tied to the politics of the Second Empire as the Palais Bourbon, which housed the Corps législatif, the lower chamber of Napoleon III's government. Édouard Baldus, one of the most accomplished architectural photographers of the period, recorded the building in an albumen print that has been gold toned to deepen its tones and improve its permanence. The picture comes from the album *Paris et ses environs en photographies*, where it is numbered 55 on page 6. Baldus's views of the city's monuments were widely admired for their clarity and careful composition.
